The Missions Calling-
Growing up in my home church in Redwood City, California, I remember our monthly
Communion services at the close of the message. Pastor would always place an open Bible on
the Communion table and encourage people to bring their missions offering and place it on the
Bible. This tradition made quite an impression upon me as a young boy growing up in that
church.
At 10 years old, I had the opportunity to go to kid's camp, and after I came back home, I
had such a desire to be baptized in water, I wanted everybody to know I was a follower of Jesus
and I wanted them to know my commitment. That summer I had a vision that I was going up a
river, with a missionary, alongside him in ministry. I looked from the boat at the riverbank and I
could see the people, kids with different skin color, and hair color. The house they lived in was
different than mine. It was built on stilts, and the roof was thatched.
When I had turned 60 years of age, I had the privilege to make a trip to Bluefields
Nicaragua in the southern Atlantic coast of Nicaragua. That Sunday we had a kids rally at the
local church and over 300 kids came to celebrate Jesus. The pastor came to me and said "You
know Phil, tomorrow I want to take you up the river and I want you to see some property that we
have secured for the Santa Rita church." The next morning, we all loaded into the panga boat to
travel up the river to the church. I was alongside Pastor Angel, Missionary Troy Doudy and Ron
Shearer, a businessman who has helped me with many of the missions' trips. Pastor Angel told
me that their goal was to build a cement block building on the property to create a safe place for
their congregation to worship. The original building had a thatched roof, and it would blow away
during a storm, forcing them to have to rebuild.
Along the journey I recognized the riverbank; the houses with thatched roofs; a family
waiting for us. These drew a picture in my mind - the same picture from the vision I had as a
young boy. Since that time, the Lord has opened the door to 19 trips to the southern Atlantic
coast of Nicaragua, ministering with missionary Troy Doudy. God's calling has also opened the
door to ministry in Panama, Costa Rica, Belize and Honduras. I have also had the privilege of
going to Thailand, Cambodia, Fiji, Greece, Turkey, South Africa, and Romania.
The mission of M4K.world is to bring training, resources and ministry to the kids and to
the M4K.world leaders.
